Who we are

A community-based organization located in the informal settlement of Mathare Valley, Nairobi, Kenya. Our organization started in 2022 and was officially registered in february 2024.

Our mission

To achieve sustainable, positive change in regards to the human right to housing.

Our goal

To build 10 houses within 10 months

Taking charge of our living environment

We are 14 members (13 local residents and one ambassador from the Netherlands) who envision a better, safer and healthier living environment by building new houses for our community. Because we believe that everybody deserves to have a place to call home. And nobody should live in fear to lose it.

Our methods

Community Land Trust (CLT)

The CLT is a democratic, non-profit model that allows residents to hold land and assets in a group. It enables tenure security and socio-economic empowerment of residents through home ownership. The CLT prevents gentrification and subletting, external interferences, market driven effects. This way, community-interest is protected on the long term. The houses remain affordable for our next generations.

Compressed Earth Blocks (CEB)

The building material of Compressed Earth Blocks, made from compressed and stabilized soil, is highly strong and durable. The production method is environmentally friendly as it can be produced locally, is made from local resources, and does not require heat hence reducing CO2 emissions. The production method is affordable. And, it caters for education and employment for the local population.

Our Roadmap in 5 steps

How do we reach our goal?

01. Follow CEB training

In this training, provided by partner OSKAM, we will learn how to produce Compressed Earth Blocks: selecting the right soil mixture and operating the manual press.

Q1 of 2025

02. Acquire machinery

We will purchase the equipment from OSKAM.

Q2 of 2025

03. Form the trust

With the Community Land Trust we will acquire and hold the land as a group of residents collectively.

Q2 of 2025

04. Construct 10 houses

We work together with a local contractor to finalize our design and realise one housing block providing 10 families with a new home.

Q3 and Q4 of 2025

05. Replicate

Once the pilot project has finished, we work with other resident groups to build even more houses within our community.
